OpenInfra Live: Keynotes Recap

The Open Infrastructure Foundation held its first OpenInfra Live: Keynotes last month. The two-day virtual event featured presentations by more than 30 leaders from the global OpenInfra community streaming live on YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook. Keynote topics covered a broad range of OpenInfra use cases, and projects like OpenStack and Kubernetes took center stage.

We’ve compiled a summary of the dynamic and engaging presentations given during the OpenInfraLive: Keynotes event. Check ‘em out, and dive into the full event recordings here.

Jonathan Bryce and Mark Collier kicked off the event by discussing how our community has achieved several amazing milestones since the Open Infrastructure Foundation was launched in January of this year. Just a few of which are:

  • 25% increase in OpenInfra Foundation membership
  • Microsoft joined as a Platinum Member and Nipa Cloud joined as a Gold Member
  • All projects had major releases during the pandemic. (thank you to contributors!)
  • 66% growth in OpenStack cores in production, from 15 million to 25 million cores
  • Now over 180 data centers for public clouds are powered by OpenStack

Collier and Bryce also talked about the emergence of an OpenInfra Standard. LOKI—Linux OpenStack Kubernetes Infrastructure—highlights the trend of organizations integrating three of the top four most active open source projects together in production.

Additional segments covered hot topics like decentralization, cloud economics, open source public cloud growth, open source licensing, the introduction of the Million OpenStack core club and more.

The event wrapped with an exciting announcement that was shared in a quotable video featuring Nils Magnus, a community member from T-Systems. While the community has done incredible work virtually through the pandemic, the OpenInfra Summit is returning in person in June 2022!

Mark your calendars for June 7-9, 2022 to join the OpenInfra community in Berlin! Registration and sponsorship opportunities are now available – hurry, before it all sells out!.

Airship: Elevate your infrastructure

  • Interested in getting involved with Airship? Docs.airshipit.org has all the info you need to get started.
  • Airship is Kubernetes v1.21 certified!
  • Running or evaluating Airship? We want to hear from you! Take the brief User Survey to provide the community with feedback.

Kata Containers: The speed of containers, the security of VMs

  • Kata Containers in Production: Ant Group
    • Removing jitter and isolating other containers and OS has been a primary objective for Ant Group, which has 10,000 nodes of Kubernetes running Kata in production. Tune in to hear Sunny, community manager at the OpenInfra Foundation and Tao, Member of Kata Containers Architecture Committee, discuss this initiative on YouTube.
  • Do you use a custom Kata kernel?
    • Influence the project’s direction by letting the community members know your containers’ environment. Please complete the Kata Containers User Survey by December 31st, 2021!

OpenDev: Open Source Software Development at Scale

  • Version 2.2.0 of the git-review utility was released, incorporating fixes for ignoring unstaged or uncommitted changes in Git submodules, correct handling of Git’s core.hookspath option, and support for changes in the recent Git 2.34.0.
  • OpenDev’s set of available open source test platforms is undergoing some cleanup in January: CentOS 8 is being dropped in favor of Centos Stream (8 and 9), and Fedora 35 is replacing 34. Further, support for OpenSUSE Leap 15 and Tumbleweed, as well as for Gentoo Linux, are in need of assistance from interested users if we are to continue providing them.

OpenInfra Labs: Connecting open source projects to production

  • The Telemetry Working Group met on November 16 with a presentation on “NLP Methods for Log Anomaly Detection” given by Jan Drchal with the Czech Technical University in Prague. A recording has been posted to the Telemetry WG playlist. The December meeting will not be held due to scheduling conflicts, but meetings will resume normally on January 18 at 14:30 UTC (9:30 AM EST).
  • A special meeting was held on November 22 to update the community about progress on Project Caerus, covering near-data processing capabilities recently integrated into Apache Spark and HDFS along with some preliminary performance results.
  • The OpenInfra Labs community participated in the 2021 OpenInfra Live Keynotes, including an introduction to Taibai by Hao Wang and Haoyang Li as well as a segment on contributing to OpenInfra Labs presented by Michael Daitzman.

OpenStack: Open source software for creating private and public clouds

  • The hot topic of release cadence has come up again on the openstack-discuss mailing list. The release management team has formalized their stance and said that upon reaching the end of the alphabet (post ‘Z’ release we wrap around to ‘A’ again) would be a good time to change the cadence. Now that OpenStack’s development pace has slowed, it might be a good time to switch to a one year cadence.
  • In continuing to look to the future, there are discussions being had about when to drop Python3.6. While it will likely still be around for the Yoga release, it will likely be dropped for the ‘Z’ release so consider this your call to start thinking about Python upgrades.

StarlingX: A fully featured cloud for the distributed edge

Zuul: Stop merging broken code

  • Check out the OpenInfra Live Keynotes segment Zuul in Hybrid Environments from ACME Gating’s Jim Blair, to learn how Zuul integrates with many code review systems and cloud providers at the same time.

Meet The Organizations Supporting the OpenInfra Foundation

  • The Open Infrastructure Foundation thanks all its members for their ongoing support of the OpenInfra community. Check out the OpenInfra Foundation blog to learn how these organizations are helping open source communities build the tools infrastructure operators need for Data Center Clouds, 5G, Edge, Containers, CI/CD and beyond!
  • This month we are highlighting OpenInfra Platinum member: Fiberhome, OpenInfra Gold member: China Unicom, and OpenInfra Silver member: B1 Systems. Thank you for your support!
