In collaboration with Sardina Systems, DKRZ, the German Climate Computing Center, provides high-performance computing platforms for leading climate scientists and researchers working with climate models. Learn how Sardina Systems enterprise cloud management platform FishOS powers the OpenStack and Ceph-based cloud system to support climate research at DKRZ.
What is the name of your organization?
As a national HPC center specifically for Earth system research, DKRZ provides high-performance computing platforms, sophisticated and high capacity data management, and superior service for premium climate science to researchers in Germany.
How has OpenStack transformed your organization?
To complement the DKRZ HPC center and archive with cloud services, Sardina Systems implemented its FishOS based on the OpenStack solution allowing the DKRZ to manage the cloud system with fully automated, flexible, reliable, scalable operations and zero-downtime upgrades.
What workloads are you running on OpenStack?
Workloads may vary in intensity and can require different levels of scaling. When workloads are particularly intense, the FishOS system can automatically scale up to thousands of servers to guarantee a smooth and constant work process
What is the scale of your OpenStack environment?
Currently, it has about 10 nodes, but DKRZ has plans to scale up the count of nodes.
What other open source technologies are integrated with your OpenStack environment?
DKRZ provides services specially designed to support climate researchers in their work with highly complex simulation models around the workflows in model development and data production. There is only Sardina System brainchild FishOS components based on the open source model.
