Meet ArvanCloud, one of the 11 nominees for the Superuser Awards in 2022

Who do you think should win the 2022 Superuser Awards? The annual Superuser Awards is to recognize organizations that have used open infrastructure to improve their business while contributing back to the community.

This year, the Superuser Awards winner will be announced at the OpenInfra Summit Berlin, June 7-9! Join the global community for its first in-person Summit in over two years and collaborate directly with the people building and running open source infrastructure using OpenStack, Kubernetes and 30+ other technologies. ArvanCloud is one of the 11 nominees for the Superuser Awards 2022. Check out why its team getting nominated:

Who is the nominee?

ArvanCloud comprised of six technical product teams including CDN, Container Services, Cloud Servers, ObjectStorage, VideoPlatform, Metric Services and a dedicated active/passive team for operating and expanding our data centers. Due to offering a various range of reliable cloud services in an unified cloud environment and as one of the fastest-growing providers in the market focusing on developing countries, we claim to be one the best solutions in the MENA region offering both public and private services to customers and different organizations. More than 100 engineers are involved to develop and implement different services based on open source technologies and optimizing them for scale.

How has open infrastructure transformed the organization’s business?

By using OpenStack as our public and private cloud platform, we reduced our cluster provisioning and service delivery to less than 24 hours and cut server and operation/maintenance costs by around 20%. Also by using Ceph as our SDS, we saved a considerable amount of financial resource for not using expensive licensed-based enterprise storage solutions. The reduction of cluster provisioning and implementation time to value us decreasing our time to market for opening-up new PoPs and faster utilization of the payed capital. We gained the highest flexibility to respond to our customers need by developing and the ability to easily integrated different services together just because using OSS. This infrastructure is also being used for our Container services product (our public PaaS service).

How has the organization participated in or contributed to an open source project?

From 2015 we’ve been actively participating and contributing to different projects, reporting different bugs. Most of these services are listed in the open source technologies section.

What open source technologies does the organization use in its open infrastructure environment?

Very Common components in all services: Prometheus, Grafana, AlertManager, Terraform, ELK, Docker, Zabbix

CDN: Salt, Bird, Nginx, MariaDB, Redis, ClickHouse, Kafka

CloudServer: Ceph, OpenStack, Ansible, OVS, OVN, KVM, HAProxy, Keepalived, Rabbitmq, MairaDB, Tempest, Rally, Kafka, Kolla-Ansible, Ceph-Ansible

ObjectStorage: Ceph, MongoDB, Ansible, Grafana, Influxdb, Redis

ContainerService: Ansible, Kubernetes, Redis, CoreDNS

What is the scale of your open infrastructure environment?

Cloud Server: five Public Clusters in five data centers, two private clusters for private IaaS customers, +500 bare metal nodes, +10,000 VMs, 5 PB Storage CDN: 2TB DDOS protection Capacity, ~10 Billion Daily Requests, Top 10 CDNs according to w3tech and cdnperf

What kind of operational challenges have you overcome during your experience with open infrastructure?

Zero Downtime cluster upgrade for OpenStack versions and Kubernetes clusters, pulling our CDN edge from the production with zero downtime.

How is this team innovating with open infrastructure?

We are distributed to +40 PoPs in our CDN worldwide network, and five different locations for our IaaS/cloud service product worldwide.

The Superuser Editorial Advisory Board will review the nominees and determine the finalists and overall winner after the community has had a chance to review the nominees. Stay tuned!
